Left Pro Tools a few years back and haven't missed it since. No thanks! Been there done that and not going back. I'm not a huge Logic user or that much of a fan, but for the price you get a lot in the package.Īlso, make sure you explain correctly to the end user that you will also need an iLok key to run the software. I was at a very large studio last week doing some final work for a contract and the engineer had more than 40 tracks running on Logic.

If you are having trouble running more than 20 tracks on Logic, it's not the software but the hardware configuration. Actually, you will cry yearly with the fee you have to pay. Please make sure to explain that you have a yearly subscription fee as well. Learn as you go so you don't blow too much money on stuff you don't really need.

Just like MSWord comes with a lot of nice features.īut unless you're doing a certain type of thing, or happy with the results as is, you'll find yourself outgrowing this interface or having to upgrade things very quickly. The software doesn't "do it for you".ĭefinitely use the free Cubase LE, GB, and Audacity, and if you want to go the extra $200 for LPX, definitely get it if your money's not better spent elsewhere (like a good mic.) on MSWord.īut using it is like using the software instead of writing freehand - you get "type face" letters, the ability to spell-check, include clip art, print publisher-ready copies, do some basic graphic design, etc.īut to do all this well, you still have to learn a lot about the software, and you still need the artistry to create these things. You can write a best-selling novel, a pulitzer prize winning poem, an oscar-worthy screenplay, etc. Think of these programs like Microsoft Word. There's actually a lot involved - buy, the manufacturers really hit a gold mine in this market because they get to sell you piece after piece after piece, and all the while while you learn more about it, you realize you have to buy yet another piece! It's a money pit! It's a little "proprietary" and tries, like much modern software, "to do things for you" which I don't care for, but if you've not been "tainted" by other software, this probably won't bother you.īe warned that you're not going to buy a DAW and produce music, hits, record a band, etc. However, for what you're planning to do, Logic is very user friendly especially for a beginner. Unlike them though when I switched to Logic, I hated it. So if you're new to DAWs, get used to the different workflows of the three entry level programs (which cost you nothing aside from buying the interface, which you need anyway) before investing in a full-fledged DAW until you're sure of what's going to work best for you.Īs totally bored said, they're all basically the same idea. That's not to say that you can't do everything in one DAW, but they generally tend to be "geared toward" certain workflows - some software is better suited to certain tasks than others. I use Cubase or Logic for that (or really, GB for "ideas" because it's so much simpler).

I never do any "composing" or "trying out ideas" in Pro Tools. I never do any "recording" in Logic or Cubase. These represent the "entry level" if you will for:

If you've not used DAWs before, and you have a Mac with Garageband, download Audacity for free, buy the interface and install Cubase LE.Īudacity for "learning to track/basic "recorder" style DAW use"Ĭubase for "composing, creating, and putting everything together".

The full blown Cubase is a much better program than Logic IMHO - the LE is a "lite" version that doesn't have any of its own good virtual instruments (used to come with 3 "examples") but is still highly functional for MIDI Sequencing and Audio Recording. Of course it means you could never install it in a rack (but many don't) but even just sitting on a desk, it's nice to have the flat surface to set something else on every once in a while! Logic may absolutely work for you - again especially if you're coming from GB.Īs for the interface, there's a reason the Focusrite and Presonus interfaces sell so well.īut I don't see anything major wrong with the NI, aside from the giant knob on top. There are things people don't like about all of them and of course you have your supporters and detractors for all of them. Now, if you've never used any other DAWs, and especially if you've been using Garageband, then Logic is, the, er, um, "logical" choice.

Having used many DAWs, and most recently trying Logic Pro X, I hate it.

I have a wonderful quote about various DAWs that is completely accurate and includes "Logic is the only one that makes me end up banging my head against a wall". You'll get plentyįirstly, how many DAW programs have you looked into, and/or have you used before?
